MMA Committee

It is indeed an honour and privilege for me to be given this opportunity to pen down a few words in the Sarawak Branch's 25th Annual Magazine 2007 in conjunction with the Annual/Installation Dinner.

As a President, I have set some priorities especially with reference to the welfare of our doctors in the country. One of the priority is the campaign for the concept of "doctor-friendly" hospitals so that our doctors can sought treatment and be given a special discount at all private hospitals under this concept. As a reward, doctors will be encouraged to refer cases to all these "doctor-friendly" hospitals.

As health care becomes more complex and more technology driven, it has become more costly. Even doctors are beginning to find that they are suddenly burdened with unexpected costs in the prime of their lives. It is no longer true that doctors are able to get medical treatment they require from their colleagues and friends or at the government hospitals at discounted rates. Like any other consumers, they are becoming subjected to changing market forces.

Hence, I am going to look at affordable health insurance for all doctors if possible lifetime health insurance. Currently, most local health insurers cancel insurance once the insured reaches the age of 70 years. Yet the statistics are clear that most catastrophic illnesses occur in the later part of our lives, in the 70s, 80s and 90s. I think we must and can negotiate with the insurance companies to provide life cover even if this cover is only for catastrophic illnesses.

I wish to congratulate and welcome Prof. Dr. Sim Kui-Hian to the post of Chairman of the Branch. I am sure with Prof. Sim's commitment and dedication, the Branch will benefit well. I would also like to take this opportunity to say 'syabas' and express my gratitude to the Past Chairman, a very capable man, Dr. Lam Chin Chyou, for his good work and performance of the Branch last term.

On behalf of the MMA Council and Exco, I pledge strong support towards the activities of the Sarawak Branch. I sincerely wish all the members of the Sarawak Branch a successful year ahead.
